クリスマスソング（Christmas Song)

あと1週間ほどでクリスマスです。　今年はコロナのために外出もままならず、街のイルミネーションを楽しむことができずにいますが、クリスマスソングを聴きながら年末の気分に浸ろうと思います。

1984年、ボブ・ゲルドフとミッジ・ユーロが発起したチャリティー・プロジェクトです。　80年代のアフリカはまだ原始的な生活をしていたところが多く、エチオピアで起きた飢餓を受けてこの曲が作られました。　89年にはBand Aid 2、2004年にはBand Aid 20、2014年にはBand Aid 30 (これはエボラ出血熱の支援）として続いています。　ジョージ・マイケルやデビッド・ボウイは亡くなってしまいましたが。。
It was a charity project initiated by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure in 1984.　In the 80’s, many parts of Africa were still living in primitive conditions, and this song was written in response to the famine that occurred in Ethiopia.　It was followed by Band Aid 2 in 1989, Band Aid 20 in 2004, and Band Aid 30 in 2014 (this one in support of Ebola).　George Michael and David Bowie have passed away, though.

Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas (Frank Sinatra)

クリスマスといえば不思議とこの人の声を聴かずにいられなくなります。この曲は元々、ジュディ・ガーランドが1947年の映画「若草の頃」のために歌ったものですが、これをシナトラが明るい曲調に変えてリリースしたといわれています。
When I think of Christmas, I strangely can’t help but listen to this man’s voice. This song was originally sung by Judy Garland for the 1947 movie “Meet Me In St. Louis”, but Sinatra changed it to a brighter tune and released it.

Driving Home For Christmas (Chris Rea)

この曲は、歌詞がとてもいいです。ドライブしながら家族の顔を見るのを待ちきれない気持ちが描かれています。「横に並ぶドライバーも同じ気持ちだろう」とも歌っています。　彼のしゃがれた歌声とマッチしていて、私のお気に入りの曲です。
This song has very good lyrics. It describes the feeling not being able to wait to see his family, driving his car. He also sings, “I’m sure the driver next to me feels the same way.”　It is one of my favorite songs because it matches his croaky voice.

クリスマス・イブ（山下達郎）Christmas Eve: Tatsuro Yamashita

日本では説明不要のクリスマスソングで、1983年リリースのアルバム「Melodies」に収録されています。　山下達郎自身、「歌詞・曲・編曲・演奏等すべてがバランスよく仕上がった、自分の代名詞となる一曲」と評しています。　アルバム発売が6月だったこともあり、当初はさほど注目されていなかったようですが、毎年クリスマスが近づくたびにこの曲が流れるようになりました。発売から今年で37年経ちますが、全く色あせないですね。　歌詞自体は男の片思いを描いており、ちょっと切ないものがあります。
This is a Christmas song that needs no explanation in Japan, and was included in the album “Melodies” released in 1983.　Tatsuro Yamashita himself described it as “a song that has become synonymous with me, with a good balance of lyrics, music, arrangement, and performance”.　Since the album was released in June, it did not seem to attract much attention at first, but every year as Christmas season is coming closer, this song starts to be played. It has been 37 years since its release this year, but it hasn’t faded at all.　The lyrics themselves are about a man’s unrequited love, and are a bit sad.
